Jackson is Californicated to the max. For real Wyoming in that part of the state, try Afton or Pinedale or Dubois, Cody or Lander, and even those places are getting pricey. The secret spot of Wyoming is Saratoga, just west of the Medicine Bow range. Great fishing, airport access, I-80 just 30 miles away, or Sheridan, another hidden gem.

 

I've got no real interest in moving to Colorado, but my retirement (if I make it another 20 years) will include copious amounts of alcohol, preferably good beer and good bourbon.

 

I have lived in a bigly number of places and visited 47 of our 57 states, and I can't say that any of them are that bad.

Well, I hate Philadelphia, but that's another story for another day. Tallahassee is kind of a rathole, but had great donuts when I was there, so it gets a pass. Anyone who knows me knows I think San Francisco is a hellhole, but the rest of the state is pretty marvelous.

Truth or Consequences ain't got a lot to recommend it, but New Mexico is beautiful. Louisiana makes a great tidal basin.

Compared to the simmering shithole that is Paris, almost any U.S. town is better.

The first time I drove across Louisiana on I-10 I remember saying to whoever was in the car with me, "We should give this back to the French."

I was in Tallahassee for the opening weekend of the NCAA Tournament many years ago. Went out for a run one morning at 6 a.m. and found myself in a horrible section of town. A couple of guys were hanging out on a street corner and one of them said as I went by, "Man, you're in the wrong part of town," and I did not question his honesty.

 

The Cody area is the target.

 

We just decided to take a road trip to Mississippi, so we'll be driving through plenty of awfulness in Virginia, Tennessee, and Alabama.

I'll report back any findings that may impact the rankings.

 

There are some beautiful stretches of road in Tennessee.
