More Cuts at ESPN

The degree to which ESPN feels the cord-cutting pain is on ESPN, not cord-cutting. ESPN made so much money over so many years that it should have so much upon which to draw that mass layoffs aren't useful or necessary. But ESPN hired too many people, burned money on far too many things, and, like most empires, got way too big.

    That's a fair summary.

Let me amend my remarks. ESPN expanded wildly, leaving itself vulnerable to the cord-cutting shock. Of all the channels, it contributes most to the cost of a cable bill because of its carriage fees, so that seems like the free market in action to me.

That's really not how any of this works. Disney wants to maintain profit margins. Those cuts were coming regardless. Staying frugal just would have given Disney a larger profit margin to maintain.

No ... why does your post have me saying that stuff? I didn't write "The degree to which ESPN feels the cord-cutting pain is on ESPN, not cord-cutting. ESPN made so much money over so many years that it should have so much upon which to draw that mass layoffs aren't useful or necessary. But ESPN hired too many people, burned money on far too many things, and, like most empires, got way too big." St. @Alma did.

I honestly don't know how that happened. I know I hit reply to Alma. Mods, we may have a problem, or I may have screwed up in some way. That's always possible, even though I don't know how I could've.

I don't know why ESPN fired Ed Werder and am sorry they did.

But I think the quotes about "quality of work" not being a factor were just a way to soften the blow. It is hard enough to fire someone without coming out and saying "you suck".

They aren't my colleagues and you didn't even know it was proper English to use impact as a verb. It is a matter of style and/or preference. I doubt you even understand the distinction.

You've stated your meaningless and subjective opinion before and it makes as little impact now as it did the first time.
