    I've noticed that lots of urban areas go to a lot of trouble to keep it that way.

    Profit margins on grocery stores are about 1%, low income areas may not generate enough revenue to justify their existence.

    It may not be PC to say so, but losses to theft cut into that slim margin as well.

    Meh ... you might look up, e.g., Chicago's or D.C.'s history when it comes to effecting more shopping options for low-income residents. Here's a hint: The wants/needs of the low-income residents don't really factor into those decision-makers being spurred by "democratic processes."

    A growing trend in low-income neighborhoods is the cost plus 10 grocery store. Something says $1 on the price tag and they add 10 cents, then tax, at the register.

    That has always amazed me, but I guess it makes sense. If you don't sell a TV immediately, it's still good. If you don't sell a tomato, it takes the name of a popular website originally named for unpopular movies.
