While the President has legal authority to fire an FBI director, the fact that Trump has done so under circumstances of an active FBI investigation of the President’s own campaign violates profoundly important norms of an independent, non-political FBI.

No way in hell you would be saying that if he had taken action that influenced the election the other way and presented incorrect information in the process. None.

I think the optics of this alone will bring enough republican support that there's no other option than an independent prosecutor.

Congress will probably like to show it's an equal branch of the government.

Perhaps this might even confuse some of Trump's cult voters. He fired the guy who brought down Hillary Clinton. He also wants to gut their healthcare and give that money to the already wealthy. And there will never be a wall.

He's on pace to fail at pretty much everything he promised.
