But 'ahistoric' is much less commonly used word than 'historic.'
Further, in the case of use in writing, the space between 'a' and 'historic' or the lack of such a space makes the meaning clear.
In the case of spoken use, as well as in writing, the context should also make it clear. 'Historic' and 'ahistoric' are not quite opposites but still have very different meanings.
Lastly, 'ahistoric' still requires an article, so the addition of that article further clarifies that 'ahistoric' is a single word.
    'It was a historic event.'
    Vs.
    'It was an ahistoric event.'

I think the 'an historical' evolved because we make the h silent and elide the two words when speaking. Saying "a historical" feels bumpy (for lack of a better word) but "an 'istorical' flows trippingly off the tongue.

Especially at a wedding where they know 95% of the guests are paying for flights and hotels to attend.

No kidding. Every time I've heard there's a cash bar, I bring a flask or something of the sort. If you ask people to drop money on a flight and a hotel (and maybe even a vacation day or two from work), you damn well better provide them with free booze. It's just half-assed and cheap, and it's something that people will remember. They won't remember the food or the flowers or the setting. They'll remember dropping $100 at the bar.

If you are one of the kids from 'Chitty Chitty Bang Bang' or 'Oliver,' then 'an istorical' is acceptable.

Stay clear of the weddings, man. That's the reason most of us go to them.
