Big weddings are a complete waste of time, stress and money. You are paying tens of thousands to throw a party for people who can't wait to simply eat and get shitfaced. The wedding is a bore and the speeches are painful to most. Save the cash and go somewhere nice.

 

exactly. I essentially eloped, got married in Vegas, then spent two weeks visiting Bryce, Zion, Grand Tetons and Grand Canyon. It was basically bc her parents had no cash. Plus she was not the "look at me" princess bride type. We got divorced eventually, but I still don't regret how we got married. High priced, lavish weddings are a waste of money. But if you DO have one, don't invite me and make me pay for my damn drinks

 

The quality of my marriage has been inversely proportional to the grandiosity of my wedding.

The bigger the wedding, the bigger the shitshow that followed.

 

I'm not saying this applies to you, but it has always seemed to me that many people - particularly folks I knew in my 20s - want to have a wedding but don't really want to be married.

 

Makes perfect sense. A lot of people (like my ex, for example) are really vapid and self-centered.

Weddings celebrate that. Marriages do not.

 

Weddings often are the reason people drink AFTER them, too.

 

They may have made the decision that they would rather get married where they want than have you attend.

 

They did, and that is their choice to make.
And it is my right to be irked by it.

I think they genuinely wanted us to attend, but that certainly was not their top priority. I didn't expect our attendance to be their top priority.
We're still friends.
But destination weddings irk me.
