Trump merely amplified what the right preferred to imply. Trump's lack of savvy on these fronts has at least (at last) allowed us to see the right for what it really has become. Trump wouldn't have won 25 years ago, or 16 years ago. He wins now because of the cumulative, brutal effect of the right wing on American discourse.

The amount of leakage around Trump now suggests that at least some of the people who speak for him and advise just want him out. And while that's understandable, to do so without resigning - to play inside informant for the press - lacks integrity in exact same kind of way the party as a whole does. It is a legion of cowards who hide behind double talk and libertarian money and privilege. Bateman, with whom I rarely agree, is right. The "ruling class" of the right seeks to reclaim its party to do the same old sludgy shit. Only, if Trump is ousted, they'll claim credit for having the backbone to nudge him out.

If you're a capital hill reporter and want to bust your cousin's balls for his birthday, make sure you aren't texting a former GOP congressman instead.

See the mistake there is not understanding regional expectations. They only go for chopped whole hog in Riyadh.

This edged into "B" territory in places, but the "intersectionality" and "hegemony" gaps meant it had no chance at the "A" pile.

Every President at one point or another faces politically motivated attacks and allegations. Just in my lifetime, the Iran Hostage situation, Iran-Contra, Whitewater/Lewinsky, 9/11 blame, Benghazi ... all of those were in part fueled or kept alive with partisan zeal. That's just part of the game.

The difference is we've never had a President so sloppy, so arrogant and so ill-prepared for the political machinations of the job. Those who considered his outsider status a positive gambled that he would get the first leg up. They lost that gamble. (And a lot of traditional
GOP voters were skeptical at best from the beginning. President Trump had to spend more time than usual in his transition/early administration galvanizing his base.)

However, is it possible President Trump/the GOP benefit by having this come up so early? If the scapegoats go down and things love forward by the end of the year, can they rally the troops and limit the damage going into the midterms?
