Actually, she was MUCH better before she opted for the bubble gum-and-sex schlock. When it was about her voice, and before she decided she was royalty. It's been a narcissistic shit-show since.

Mariah eventually went full diva, but before then I thought that she had a great voice but her singing had no soul.

I don't see the connection between Springsteen and Seger.

Seger, IMHO, is one of the best lyricists from the 1970s. Incredible storytelling with each song.

Springsteen? Meh. I like a few, but I'd take Seger every day of the week.

Although I really like "Roll Me Away," it's really a kind of hammy attempt to translate "Thunder Road" into a northern Michigan setting (right down to Roy Bittan's piano tinkling).

Although as has already been chewed over on other threads, if you're "12 hours out of Mackinaw City," you're probably either somewhere in North Dakota, Tennessee or Pennnsylvania.

For myself, who hasn't bought anything released after 1990 or thereabouts, and thus knows nothing about much of the music discussed here:

Grateful Dead, Led Zeppelin, can't listen to them.

Bruce, who I saw in 1973 and 1974, before he broke out, anything after 1985 or so.

Bonnie Raitt, anything after "Green Light" is lightweight pop.

If you lived in the Midwest from mid-1970-mid-1980s, Bob Seger was the best thing going. I'll stack his music from that era against anyone, even St. Bruce.

And it is impossible to underrate the pride of Waukesha, Wis., the BoDeans. Love their music.

Just looked them up because I didn't even know the BoDeans did anything before Party of Five.

You Don't Get Much is a good song. Had whichever album that was on, still think that cassette is in a box with other cassettes somewhere in my basement or attic.

The album with "Angels," "She's a Runaway," and "Still the Night" ("Love Hope Sex Dreams" maybe?) from '89-ish is ungodly fantastic.

Looks like I need to check them out. I was painfully unaware of their resume.

I think this thread should be retitled "Bands/Performers I Just Don't Get". It would honour the subjectivity of musical taste. :)

    'I don't get'.....
Jackson Browne. Some of his stuff is good but way too maudlin for me. I saw him in concert about 6 years ago in Victoria BC and he did an acoustic show with no backing musicians. Just awful. The only upbeat number was "Doctor, My Eyes" which he played on a keyboard but the rest was dreadful with basically all deep cuts performed.
Wasn't crazy about him before but really don't care for him based on the plodding music he performed vs. the incredible hype all the LA musicians give him.
Worst concert I've been to tied with Rod Stewart in about '78 or so when he was touring on "Hot Legs". He was very good in the "Gasoline Alley" era but should have retired years ago.

Jackson Browne is right up my alley. I don't need upbeat shit; I like realism. The Pretender is fantastic.
