There will, of course, be no consequences for this.

He'll win. By less than a Montana Republican should win, but he'll win. Republicans will rally around his version of events despite them being utterly contradicted by the audio recording, with a healthy dose of "reporters shouldn't be asking questions, practically trespassing, lucky he didn't shoot him" if they think they're safely among friends who won't contradict them. No charges will be filed. YankeeFan will wait for the talking points to be settled then diligently repeat them.

This is just dumb. Not a nuanced point worth making and not one you made well. I'm not sure it can be made well.

It's like Democrats don't have a chance in statewide elections.

It's a home-field advantage with a heavy candidate factor. A good Democrat can beat a bad Republican there, but tie goes to the R. Quist is not a great candidate. This would be disqualifying if Republican voters were sane, but they aren't.

I once had a major beef with a local Democratic politician. Long story, but I actually had to step in between him and my reporter to prevent something like what happened tonight.

I was an assigning editor, and just went about doing my job. I treated him like I treated anyone else, and was very hard on my reporter if I felt he wasn't doing the same.

That being said, I'm not going to pretend I didn't get a kick out of it when a scandal hit him and we broke the story.

He'll win by more than he would have otherwise. The freaks who wouldn't have bothered will now vote, giant chips on their shoulders against the libruhl media. If I'm law enforcement, I'm hating this. More skirmishes to break up. Otherwise, they'll vote in the same cretins they always elect.

Rick, there will be a civil suit, and I wouldn't be so sure charges won't be filed. Jacobs can file a complaint. If no charges are filed, then Montana has no law worth respecting.
PS: I am not so sure Montana Republicans will embrace this shit. Gianforte may and probably will still win, but he's not gonna be anybody's favorite son. And again, he must run again next year.

If they elect local prosecutors in Montana and the DA is up for election any time soon, there's no chance of charges. They'll call a press conference to announce an investigation. Weeks will pass. No charges. They'll never get a conviction. The thug could have literally killed the reporter with video and a jury would have found a way to deem it to be an act of self defense.

I'm sure some people will be "troubled," though.
