I have heard of a grand total of zero songs on Billboard's current Hot 100

My mother-in-law has a cassette player in her car. In 2017.

    Sorry. Carry on.

Man, I had a hell of a time making mix CDs for my friends for a year or two, back before Napster. I'd find MP3s of anything they could think of.

As someone who was a grade schooler in 1989, there was something off about music that year. 1988 was okay and so was 1990. 1989 was just weird.

There are some really memorable songs among the 1989 No. 1 hits, though. The only real jokes are New Kids on the Block and Milli Vanilli. It's remarkable how many "adult contemporary"-type songs went No. 1 back then. Outside of Adele, perhaps, that just doesn't happen any more. That was kind of the underlying theory of this thread - grown-ups used to drive top 40 radio, and now they don't.

1989 was the year a lot of old acts made comebacks. Doobie Brothers, 38 Special, Cher and Donnie fucking Osmond each spent time in the top 40. You also had hair metal firing on all cylinders with Great White, Warrant and Winger spending time in the top 40. Martika was there for an hour with Toy Soldiers and Guns n Roses went acoustic with Patience. Just an odd time period.

It's almost as if you'd anticipate something bubbling beneath the surface was about to blow it all up ...

That song sucked incredible balls and was unavoidable.
