If only there was some way for presidents to keep information they considered privileged from being aired before a congressional committee.

On the first point, IMO firing Comey was a pretty solid "step" toward applying "further pressure" on Comey to stop investigating anything on the government's dime ever again, specifically including the Russia investigation – according to Trump's public words to Lester Holt and leaked words to the Russians.

Re: the second, the "big thesis of this whole investigation" is that Russia seriously meddled in the 2016 election, and we should find out the full extent of what happened to better prevent such sabotage in the future. If that investigation turns up any collusion with the Trump campaign – which we know the Russians were actively trying to help win – then so be it; a full accounting is necessary. But that is merely an offshoot of the "whole investigation." IMO this is a point that is way too often forgotten, sometimes (often?) deliberately so for partisan purposes (on both sides), and that makes me mad as an American. Sorry, BT.

Trump behaved exactly as I would expect him to.

He thinks his personal charm, and making personal connections, can get him to a desired outcome.

So, he tried to forge a personal relationship with the FBI director -- which rightly creeped the FBI director out. He appealed to Comey to to let Flynn go, because Flynn was a "good guy" who had "been through a lot".

Trump is used to trading favors. To doing deals based on personal trust between the parties involved. And, it's pure Trump -- try to cut through the layers of bullshit, get the decision makers in the room, and make a deal.

Now, it's wholly inappropriate in this situation, but Trump is a guy who doesn't recognize that. He just doesn't. And, that's not meant as a defense.

But, it's not criminal. He never tried to shut down the Russian investigation. And, he was right when he said that the FBI director had told him he wasn't personally under investigation.

Trump thinks the whole Russian investigation -- at least as it attempts to tie it to his campaign/transition/administration -- will turn up nothing, and is a big distraction, that is hurting his ability to govern. He's obviously frustrated by this, and wants it to either bring forth some evidence of wrongdoing, or conclude. And, his frustration is justified, as we've seen that the leaks the press have been relying on are both false, and one sided.

If you had spoken those words aloud, you wouldn't be able to get the taste of bullshit out of your mouth for at least a week.

"The President went on to say that if there were some ‘satellite’ associates of his who did something wrong, it would be good to find that out ..."

I'm not sure we know this.

I think the Russians, like everyone else, assumed Hillary would win. They wanted to undermine trust in our electoral process. They wanted to give Trump a reason to say the election was "rigged".

They wanted to damage her before she assumed the Presidency.

And, now that Trump has won, their goal has still been met. Clinton has blamed everyone but herself for losing. Democrats and the media are doing all they can to undermine our trust in the electoral process, and we have a President, who is politically damaged from the get go in office.
