Do we know how the shooter acquired his weapon? And while we're at it, why does anybody need such a weapon?

He purchased it legally. And as to "such a weapon", on the scale of things it is a pretty unexceptional semi-automatic rifle. Not a sniper gun, not a big deal assault rifle, just a run of the mill type infantry rifle.

 

Nope. But I do think it's reasonable to make it harder for some people to acquire them. (Mental disorders, history of domestic violence, etc.)

I always wonder why gun control advocates don't just use Economics 101. If you want less of something, tax it. Local, state and federal taxes on firearms would result in fewer of them, especially as fewer people actually own guns now, but those that do own more of them. There is no possible constitutional issue with taxing a product that's for sale.

 

Taxation for the purposes of control used to be unconstitutional if control was unconstitutional. We undercut that for Obamacare tho

Mostly because they grew up playing Army as kids. They're often fun guns to shoot. If the owner is a vet, he trained on them, they are familiar and known to be effective.

Need? No one outside the military or police really need them. You can defend your house just fine with a five shot 12 ga. pump shotgun. Your average home invader who hears the distinctive "clack-CLACK" of a pump shotgun pushing a shell into the chamber is headed for the door, right damn then.

Then again, "need" is a slippery standard. You don't need a Corvette to get to work, either. It's a matter of want and taste and the freedom to choose. That's America, and I don't mean 'Murica. Guns are a difficult and different issue though, because some nut is unlikely to use his Corvette to kill people in job lots.
