It just amazes me that these sites swing wildly from one extreme to the other. Either they go full navel-gazing longform or they chop writing out of it completely and throw up videos on a screen.

It's the good cop/bad cop cycle professional sports franchises get locked into when hiring coaches and managers.

Debated on starting a new thread, but I figured I'd throw this into here. The Longform folks were not happy with the guy in charge of SI's Hot Clicks division:

Now that I think about it, the espn page is starting to get pretty video-take heavy as well. I think most days you click on it, you are going to see a SAS and Kellerman video take on there.

SAS is the sports take equivalent of a loaded baby's diaper, but the man is hard working. I am not sure he takes much time off.

Was Stephen A Smith well regarded as an NBA reporter before he went too far?

I feel bad for the MTV News people who got canned for the second time in less than 2 years, but that stuff was aimed to a much younger demographic and failed. Plus, the Twitter presences of many of their writers - from the top down - were rather insufferable, which didn't help at all.

And 18 months from now, sites will be re-investing in the written word. Again, rinse, wash, repeat.

I won't believe the news until I hear it from Tabitha Soren.

    Exactly.
Fredrick stands by his opinion that the reason for the demise of newspapers and the printed word is the scourge of the earth being hired in advertising departments. The reporters and copy editors and desk people have been the ones terrorized by the bosses, the corporate and local bosses. The advertising departments meanwhile are stocked with the 9 to 5 ers stealing money. The advertising salespeople are laughing all the way to the bank. What an easy job. Come in the morning, tell the higherups nobody wants to purchase ads and that's that. They get paid and meanwhile the editorial people get terrorized for not having news on Twitter 3 minutes ahead of the competition.

If the advertising sales people had 1/10th the work ethic of the terrorized editorial people there never would have been this demise of print.
And the higher ups would never ever go put pressure on sales people. Why? Cause we all know print is dead and the folks at corporate say print is dead. so we terrorize the news people instead. "Put it up on twitter now for god sakes! You might get scooped by 60 seconds! And put together a video on it later in the day. Corporate LOVES video!"

Between someone posting on the Politics thread about Kennedy and you posting about Tabitha, there are two names from MTV that I haven't thought of in about 10 years. What's Kurt Loder up to these days?
