Someone was talking about it on Adam Carolla's podcast, because they had a show that got renewed while the network got canceled around it.
Apparently, Viacom or whoever owned the Esquire Channel was trying to negotiate a package deal with cable carriers for a bunch of channels. It wound up where the carriers wanted 10 channels or something like that, and the owners were trying to sell them 12, so two had to be eliminated. Esquire was one of the two that didn't make the cut.

    NBC Universal was the owner.

It was getting dropped by carriers and was falling below a threshold of subscribers it needed to be profitable. DirectTV dropped it late last year, and that was the death knell. It took 25 percent of its subscribers. Then it was not doing well in negotiations with some of the cable providers. So they announced several months ago that they were going to pull the plug and go digital only. From stuff I read, I got the sense they would have liked to sell, but there were no buyers.

It sort of makes sense. There got to be way too many channels out there, and Esquire's channel had pretty low viewership. With skinny bundles being what everyone is moving toward, small, niche channels are going to increasingly go by the wayside. It's probably a good thing. They aren't viable. That is what happens when you have increasing competition -- marginal players can't sustain themselves.

Does this mean America will have to cut down on its 16 hours of Ninja Warrior programming per day? Such a pity.

Boundless was a pretty good show on Esquire. But it would fit better on Outside TV.

It was in the mid-80s in International Falls yesterday and in the 90s in the Twin Cities.

I always get irked by these magazines and sites that do a "How to dress for a 4th of July barbeque*" and then show a pair of slacks, collared shirt and sport coat combo. Yeah, that's what you want to wear when you're going to be outside for several hours in 90+ heat and while you're lighting fireworks. "Damn it, the kid's sparkler put a hole in my Sid Mashburn linen blazer!"

I get that fashion coverage is mostly aspirational. But no segment of The Media is more out of touch with most of America than the folks writing about clothes at GQ, Esquire, etc.

(* - Also, 99 percent of the time, it's grilling not BBQing.)

With tight pants that look tiny and uncomfortable and suit coats that were made for an 8-year-old, I think the men's fashion industry is trolling us.

The "men's fashion industry" has been trolling us for its entire existence.
