Joey Styles should call the HR derby

There's an interesting dynamic at play with ESPN's baseball coverage. Shulman is stepping back from Sunday coverage, and, when the leader of the pack steps away, the rest of the crew vies for "top dog" status. It's not necessarily mean-spirited (although it can be), it's more like stepping into a vacuum.

Karl Ravech told someone (Deitsch, maybe?) that he wants the job, and he certainly was auditioning last night. The analysts were much more involved, too. They really stepped all over each other. Some of that might be the looser nature of the event itself, but Berman (when he did it) and Shulman (when he's on) are the authoritative voices who control the show. It will be interesting to see how this evolves.

I haven't minded Tex the few times I have heard him but he was just another voice trying to shout to get a word in edgewise last night.

I was not a fan of Berman but thought it was nice that Ravech paid homage with one "back, back, back" then Mendoza screeched all over the top of it reacting to the home run.

I noticed that too, I don't mind her too much on Sunday nights (as Elliotte noted, Shulman runs the show there, for now, anyway) but she went all Vickie Guerrero - to use a rasslin' analogy - over the Home Run Derby.

Charlie Blackmon said it best about Judge.

“He’s so quiet and simple that he looks like a contact hitter trapped in an ogre’s body,” the Rockies’ Charlie Blackmon said. “I don’t know that the game has ever seen a power like that.”

I didn't mind the mini-commercials on the split screen during the player time-out and time between the regular round and bonus time. Better than a five-minute block of commercials between every guy.

From what I watched last night, Mendoza was bad -- and that's kind of odd, because she's pretty good on Sunday Night Baseball.

It would be fun to have Joey Styles team up with Gus Johnson to call a Big 12 football game.

After seeing 96-98, you're not hitting 88 slider on the plate.
