Then, as in now, Russia was acting in Russia's interests. Catherine the Great despised King George. Yup, she didn't sign onto the military alliance, or send troops, that King George wanted. He even tried to bribe her with the island of Minorca, and she turned around and used it to ridicule him to the other royal courts in Europe.

It wasn't love the the America rebels, though. In fact, George thought she'd ally with him because she was afraid of rebellion. It was that she wanted Britain cut down to size. Britain had made itself into a military power and had won a few wars including the French and Indian, it had gone imperial on the world and it was dominating worldwide trade. She less cared about the colonies than she saw a threat in Britain.

With that, it's a stretch to say that Russia saved America's butt. How? By NOT doing anything? I mean, France felt the same way about Britain. ... but it didn't sit by passively and have people centuries later writing a history of them "saving America's butt." It spent 1.3 billion livres to support the Americans directly, in addition to the money it spent fighting Britain outside the U.S. and it sent actual ships and troops and fought IN the revolution.

When in our US history was it acceptable for a presidential candidate:

    1. Meet with a foreign adversary/power (Russia) to collude on election; and
    2. Deny then be caught lying about it?

Never, and should not be acceptable now.

    His loss.

I know the French better than I ever thought I would, and honestly (speaking in stereotypes, of course), they never smile (and in fact, most have upside down horseshoe mouths), all sound like Pepe Le Pew to me (and I'm not just talking about the men), and they can be insufferable with the freshman-level socialist doctrine whenever an American enters the room. But many of the French women are kind of oooh la la. I highly recommend marrying one.
