Meh ... you're not approaching it properly. No 3/5ths compromise (among others), no Constitution. Period.

Besides ... the northern states weren't exactly clean here. Many/most had slavery at the time of the Revolution/Constitution. There were still slaves in New York and New Jersey in the years immediately prior to the Civil War. Further, the northern states ratified a constitution with both the 3/5ths compromise and the fugitive slave clause: "No person held to service or labour in one state, under the laws thereof, escaping into another, shall, in consequence of any law or regulation therein, be discharged from such service or labour, but shall be delivered up on claim of the party to whom such service or labour may be due."

The 3/5ths compromise was nothing more than two distinct peoples squabbling over the rules of a game that they -- not the people it actually dealt with -- would play.

What in the actual fuck? It was a good thing that human fucking beings were treated as 3/5ths of a person? It was a good thing that human fucking beings who were forced into slavery, were captured from their homelands and brought over on ships in horrific conditions weren't considered a full person? Really?

The 3/5ths was implemented as a way to allocate representatives and electoral college counts. It was a compromise to prevent the south from gaining too much power by counting people who had zero rights and weren't even considered human.

No it was not a good thing. It helped keep a system alive for far longer than it should have. You can give me the whole it allowed the constitution to be signed but really it was nothing more than a can kicking that was finally sorted out in the 1860s.

Did you really want to give YankeeFan a response that included the word "whitewater?"

So? The people in the party with which you affiliate are dead set on undermining labor unions' ability to be effective in collectively representing their members, but that's a minor inconvenience for you because issues (like abortion) far outweigh labor in your worldview. That's your choice, of course, but lets not pretend that conservatives/Republicans aren't trying to undermine collective bargaining because QYFW identifies as a conservative.

The key labor goal of the past two decades for conservatives has been to undermine unions by ensuring the expansion of the free rider problem by introducing so-called "right to work" laws.
