"This latest story is clearly one of the most significant developments in this scandal to date, for two reasons. First, it describes an organized effort to mislead the public — not to spin, or minimize the story, or distract from it, or throw out wild accusations about someone else, but to intentionally fool everyone into believing something false. Second, it implicates the president himself. Indeed, the most extraordinary part of the picture this story paints is that while other people involved were recommending some measure of transparency on the assumption that the truth would come out eventually, they were overruled by the president, who personally dictated the misleading statement.

And it gets worse. Once the story broke, Trump’s own lawyer went to the media and denied that the president was involved in the drafting of the misleading statement. In two televised interviews, Jay Sekulow said “the president was not involved in the drafting of the statement,” “The president didn’t sign off on anything,” and “The president wasn’t involved in that.” While it’s theoretically possible that Sekulow would make emphatic statements of fact like those about what his client did or didn’t do without actually asking Trump, that seems almost impossible to believe. Sekulow is a prominent attorney who knows exactly what kind of trouble that could bring, both to himself and his client. So the only reasonable conclusion is that he was repeating what Trump told him."

So, to put this together: The president of the United States personally wrote a statement about this meeting with the Russians, a statement that everyone involved knew to be false. Going further, he then either lied to his own lawyer about his involvement so that the lawyer would repeat that lie publicly (highly likely) or was candid with his lawyer and persuaded him to lie to the media on his behalf (much less likely)."

Quite a defense there. It's not a federal crime, so it's not a big deal. That's the best Trumpists can do for their guy.
Doesn't sound like obstruction of justice, but it does sound like a lie to the public in the name of covering up something that is at least embarrassing. I thought Clinton should have been tossed for his lies. Trump should surely go for his. And for firing the FBI Director, which dies sound like obstruction of justice. And for personally profiting from his office in violation of the Constitution that Cruz et al claim to love.

That House amendment demanding an investigation into Clinton and Comey? It was crowdsourced by a staffer on a Reddit group known for a it's blatant fascism. He literally posted there to ask them for accusations he could write into it.

Make no mistake: there is a fascist resurgence in this country and they've began to accumulate influence in government. Not a lot of influence yet, but it's there and it's growing.

A memorandum by a former Presidential aide depicts Hillary Rodham Clinton as the central figure in the 1993 travel office dismissals, a politically damaging episode that the aide said had resulted from a climate of fear in which officials did not dare question Mrs. Clinton's wishes.

The newly released draft memorandum, written by David Watkins, the former top administrative aide at the White House, also sharply contradicts the White House's official account of Mrs. Clinton as merely an interested observer in the events that led to the dismissal of the White House travel staff and their replacement with Clinton associates from Arkansas.

In the memorandum, apparently intended for Thomas F. McLarty, who was the White House chief of staff, Mr. Watkins wrote that "we both know that there would be hell to pay" if "we failed to take swift and decisive action in conformity with the First Lady's wishes."

Mr. Watkins, a close Clinton associate from Arkansas, wrote the memorandum to respond to criticism of his role in the dismissal of all seven employees of the travel office in May 1993. He was dismissed himself in 1994 after using a Government helicopter for a golf outing, and White House officials said today that his description of Mrs. Clinton's role was inaccurate.

In the memorandum, Mr. Watkins gives a detailed account that says the pressure for action came directly from Mrs. Clinton and indirectly through two close Clinton friends: Harry Thomason, a Hollywood producer and part-owner of an air-charter consulting firm, and Vincent W. Foster Jr., the deputy White House counsel who committed suicide in July 1993.
