Talking to a 20-something co-worker today and made reference to the baseball bloopers scene in The Naked Gun.
Not only had he never seen it, he had no idea what it was or that they made two sequels. Ditto for Airplane! and Red Dawn.
Am I just being a 40-year-old, or do all of those movies still have a place in the cultural consciousness and he should be the one feeling some shame?

Once I became old enough and you could rent movies - I went out of my way to catch up on all the great movies I missed. I've seen all of the AFI 100, but have taken special interest in the R rated films once the MPAA ratings system took place of the code. Some great stuff from the 60s and 70s. Blazing Saddles, MASH, Cool Hand Luke, Network. The younger generation could focus on Mel Brooks and then Animal House and work forward from there. Caddyshack, Stripes, Fast Times, Airplane, 48 Hours,

What I don't get is, there's a lot of classic movies I've never seen. Some I should have, and some I'm ashamed to admit I haven't, like The Godfather and Blazing Saddles.
But I'm at least aware of them and aware of the tropes and a number of the jokes via cultural osmosis and seeing clips or memes on the internet. How could you not at least be aware of some of those?

If it's not a 90-second YouTube clip of some jackass acting like a, well, jackass, they're not gonna watch it.

I'm 40 and I have never seen any of the Naked Guns...or Fletch movies...or Blazing Saddles. But I think I know most of the concepts/jokes/etc.
I have seen Airplane, The Godfather movies and Red Dawn (both versions actually) all very much after the fact...but I was very sheltered as a child and didn't see an R rated movie until I was probably in college (Pulp Fiction).

People I knew in high school are starting to die on a semi-regular basis. That makes me feel old.

I wasn't allowed to see "The Godfather" when it came out because it was supposedly so horrifyingly violent. As it turns out, of course, it really isn't.

    Me too.
Is your name Linda, and did you live in Long Beach, Long Island, in 1984?

In concert last week, Paul McCartney said of a "Sgt. Pepper's" song: "Can you believe this came out 50 years ago?"

Rewind 30 years. The late Whitman Sr. is reading his morning paper, with a 10-year-old DW in the room. Looks up and says to Ma Whitman: "Want to feel old? Sgt. Pepper's was released 20 years ago today."
