Make the call that he would become addicted or know that cigarettes are addictive?

You're saying a 12-year-old in the '80s should have known the dangers of smoking, right? Sorry, but even with all the information available then or now, people aren't ready to make those decisions at age 12.

But you can make sound dietary decisions at that age!

'Efforts at limiting the consumption of tobacco for medicinal purposes during the 17th century failed all over Europe. In Turkey one could be beheaded for smoking in public. In Russia and Austria one could be fined, jailed, or tortured and in England King James I (the same king who realized that taxing tobacco made lots of money for the government) wrote about tobacco’s horribly addictive properties and the terrible black soot that it left in one’s lungs. The Catholic Church even tried its hand at limiting the use of tobacco by proclaiming its everyday use to be sinful. Few people listened, as there were no biblical passages that talked about the evils of smoking or sniffing tobacco.8'

Resolved: The Ebola panic in the U.S was overblown.

Arguing in favor: @Dick Whitman, to wit: The likelihood of there being an outbreak of Ebola in the U.S. is (and was) infinitesimally small, so small that as bad as contracting Ebola is, people really shouldn't have been too worried about it.

Arguing against: @outofplace, to wit: Have you read what Ebola does to you? It makes you shit blood! And it breaks down your organs! Gross! I can't believe you're defending Ebola!

Our society is just like 17th century Europe.

I never said he was defending tobacco. I said he he was wrong in saying that the dangers of second-hand smoke are overblown. If you are going to ramble on and on about what I said, at least get it right.

He had every opportunity to respond to my post rationally, but he decided to take a dump on the thread and run. And you are defending him.

DW and I have treated you more courteously on this board than any other poster. We have done so by, time and time again, trying to engage with you sincerely. Indeed, we are perhaps the only posters who'll actually do that. And our reward has been to be maligned and insulted. By you. Every fucking time.

I'm done with you. If you want to take that as yet another "triumph," knock yourself out.

Where in this did I insult you? I said you are defending Dickie when he was out of line, but I didn't insult you.

Also, your claim that Dickie has treated me more courteously than most on this board is not even close to correct. I don't know what you are thinking here, but you clearly have missed a lot that he posted if you think that.

So where are we on tobacco vs. heroin?
    Tobacco worse?
    Heroin worse?
    Equally bad?

There are few more cowardly acts on this board than putting someone on ignore, but continuing to take shots at that person.
