Nothing to do with immigrants, but there are fewer and fewer journalists who have safe jobs.

At the time we need great journalism the most, the business is crippled. Trump and many in the GOP would be happy to see real journalism crushed.

But, we're not coal miners, so there's no interest in helping bring these jobs back.

Retail is on pace to lose 350k jobs this year (figure that won't help the news biz) but you're right - politicians standing next to The Geek Squad isn't seen as a winning strategy.
There might be only 50k coal mining jobs in the US, but they wear hardhats.

So, undocumented immigrants have been working in the service industry and meat packing plants and construction since, what, the beginning of time?

    Don't be a Pollyanna here.

I'm not saying "kick em all out." I'm saying this conversation is waaaay more complex than the some in liberal media make it out to be.

Yeah, and Trump already has a request in for a permit to hire foreign workers at Mar A Lago.

You're right, of course, about the Times not being threatened by that sort of replacement.

Excellent point. Retail has been slammed and is never coming back. My wife orders everything online. Just too quick and easy.

Automation is only gonna make this worse. We're going to be losing jobs way to robots way faster than we can create meaningful new ones. Shitty freelance service jobs (Uber driving) are very temporarily slowing down the descent, but that won't last either.

We are gonna be stuck in a culture that says each person must work to justify their worth but without enough work that needs to be done.

On a sidenote - the cross tabs on Trumps polling are interesting. About the only place he hasn't lost ground is among evangelicals and the rich.

Technology is hurting everybody from journalists to factory workers to retail employees.

Well not being able to golf while vacationing at a golf resort will do that to any hard-working American.
