He can't run from the postgame interviews. He wore a freaking Fidel shirt and praised the man last year in Miami. Gase would be a fucking idiot to add to the inherent stress of his job by bringing Kaepernick to Miami.

Someone like Belichick could get away with it and just shut out the noise. But this is Gase's first head-coaching job and the last thing he wants is an off-the field circus.

BTW, there's an argument to be made that Gase doesn't have a head-coaching job without Cutler. Showing that he could get the guy to play efficiently was a huge gold star on his resume. Showed that he could make a QB other than Manning play well -- or at least better than expected. In a very real way, he owes Cutler.

What is the best case scenario for the Dolphins signing Cutler? He magically takes them from five to eight wins and they screw themselves out of a better draft pick?

Again, a first-time head coach in his second year coming off a playoff appearance isn't going to just say, "Fuck it, let's tank. There's always next year." And why should he? I'm always amazed at how many fans assume people who got to the highest level in large part through hypercompetitiveness should stop trying at the first sign of trouble.

Gase had no good options. Cutler is the least worst, because there were times he was a competent NFL starter or even a little better than that, so there's some upside along with the obvious downside that will win out. But nobody becomes an NFL head coach, not even Jim Tomsula, without believing there's no problem they can't solve if they put their minds to it.

The Dolphins were 10-6 and made the playoffs last year. Why would it take magic to get them to eight victories? Tannehill is a good quarterback, but they have some offensive talent to put around whoever is taking the snaps.

Of course, this might end up being an issue. Then again, the way the NFL is dragging its feet lately, it might be a couple of seasons before they decide if they will take action against Jarvis Landry, who is being investigated for domestic battery.

Totally random thought: I wish I could bet money on what week the NY Post will run the headline Hacken-sack.

Not sure if this was already posted, but Anquan Boldin signed a one-year deal with the Bills. He needs just 35 receptions to pass Marvin Harrison on the all-time list. That would likely leave him fifth, because Jason Witten is ahead of Boldin and also likely to pass Harrison this year. Boldin also earned a Super Bowl ring with the Ravens.

Has a case, but runs into the receiver glut.
