Do we not have a running 2017 golf thread?

Move it to Christmas day. Move it to July 4th. Move it to Mars. Regardless, no one will ever give a corn-filled shit about the FedEx Cup.

You'd think that the failure of the Tour to convince anyone that the Players is a fifth major would have let it know you can't force feed prestige onto the general public. Ask any golf fan to name recent FedEx Cup winners, and except for McIlroy winning it last year, you're going to see many blanks drawn.

Unless it's lose and go home - it's not a real playoff. See NASCAR.

    Furyk won it one year.

Then there was that one dude.

Then there was that other guy - I was watching for a minute, then I switched to the NFL.

It doesn't do much for me to have the majors done by July. I certainly could envision the PGA of America wanting to play down the street from its headquarters, at PGA National, and move the Honda Classic somewhere else that year. You can be sure Phoenix is going to start counting how many dollars it can throw at the possibility of having a major. Texas? A couple of interesting prospects there.

The whole point of golf is to have something to watch until football starts. Frigging little league baseball is going to fill the void of that weekend in August (vomit).

I think Austin CC is certainly major-worthy.

I totally agree. I always felt that if you're going to run a true "playoff," you start with 120 players and cut to the top 100 after the first playoff, the top 70 after the second, and down to the top 30 for the Tour Championship. None of this points bullshit. If Jordan Spieth has a bad week in week one, tough shit. That's how it works in actual playoffs. Opens the door for a cinderella story, the guy who is 119th and barely makes the field makes a great three-week run to Atlanta. As it is, the FedEx Cup playoffs have no life.

Sorry but it's the other way around: the PGA moving to May forced the PGA Tour's hand on The Players. Regardless of how you view the PGA, it's still a major and The Players isn't.

It would really have no life if No. 119 David Lingmerth won the Tour Championship and Jordan, Rory, Jason, DJ and Rickie were on the sidelines.

Word is that the FedExCup will condense from four to three events, so you could have that kind of scenario. But the Tour Championship also sells tickets based on knowing Spieth, DJ and Rory will be there, and the almighty TV wants that too, so I doubt the Tour would ever go completely away from the convaluted points system. Could be wrong though. This new commissioner seems open to anything.

That's interesting but the PGA's first major in May will be Bethpage. They're going to test whether a Northeastern golf course will be ready by May in case of a hard winter pretty early.
