Civil freedom is a peace treaty. It cannot be held with people whose avowed intention is to use it to tear it down.

Trump has played the blame game with the left so many times, it's all he knows to do. A one-trick pony. Now he not only has to criticize the right, but needs to take the lead in doing so, and as we saw in the health care battle in Congress, he has no leadership skills politically. Sad!

 

Actually, this is a good one for the "changed my mind" thread.

I used to be hardcore ACLU-style freedom of speech. Not just as a legal right, but as a moral philosophy. But it doesn't work. Sometimes an action, including speech, is meant as an assault on people's rights to feel secure. That includes some ideas. It's the paradox of tolerance: tolerance cannot be forced to accept intolerance's attempts to tear it down. This is the same reason I've come around on the existence of hate crime statutes.
