Perhaps, but simply reading that quote points out the contrast between what an educated person sounded like then compared to today.
Douglas Southall Freeman's "R. E. Lee" is probably the definitive biography, but I think you can get an even better feel by reading his "Lee's Lieutenants", a three volume history of Lee and his officers. Much of the books were sourced from the contemporaneous letters of those involved, as well as their dispatches, reports, and memoirs. The quality of the language is markedly different from our current usage, as is the open and sincere Christianity of the writers.

Finely crafted books, and a first rate history of the Army of Northern Virginia, both in action and behind the scenes.

All it takes to tell what Trump is really thinking is to look at what he says impulsively, when he jumps off the teleprompter and interjects his own thought and feelings. This is a classic example. We've all seen it repeatedly on Twitter as well. It does not matter how carefully crafted a strategic talking point is, once he gets going he'll ad lib and that's when he can't help himself, he blurts out the truth.

Ok, YF, now do this one.

"-- Compare Trump’s muted reaction to Charlottesville with his animated response last December to a similar incident in Columbus, another college town where an extremist plowed a car into a crowd of people. Abdul Razak Ali Artan, an Ohio State University student, drove a Honda sedan through a crowd outside a school building last November before emerging from the vehicle and slashing at people with a butcher knife. As president-elect, Trump flew to OSU to meet with survivors and praise the cop who shot the attacker to death. “This is a great honor for me today,” Trump told reporters during the visit. “We’re in a fantastic state that I love, Ohio.” One big difference: Artan was a Somali Muslim refugee. It's not even clear Trump has tried to call the mother of Charlottesville victim Heather Heyer."

From the WaPo's daily 202. Bold text theirs.

I've now seen defended on this site Phil fucking Collins on the night of Whitney Houston's death and the looks of Steve Bannon.

    God bless you goofy bastards.

And he wears that look of disgust, exasperation, whatever, when he's reading from the staff-written script, then gets animated when he veers off on a tangent that usually makes him look more stupider. And he thinks nobody notices this?

Of note: Trump won Ohio, but not Virginia.
