You'd have to read the book to understand. One of these officer's letters home to his wife would be quoted, and he would attribute his survival and the success of the attack he led to the guidance of divine providence. It was another era, and part of the point that I was making was that the language and the speech patterns were all but completely foreign to us today.

There's no hint of irony, he would be completely sincere in his belief. We're speaking of people who would not understand the concept of "postmodern".

I might add that the first volume was published 75 years ago, which likely adds to the effect, as the author was playing it completely straight as well.
