Verlander has pitched great since the All-Star break; he'd be a monster pickup for any playoff contender.

To get rid of Cabrera, the Tigers would essentially have to pay off his contract in full. It might be worth it to get him off the roster and out of the batting order.

Anyone know about the prospect? Salary dump or decent level prospect?

Tigers deal Justin Upton to Angels

I don't think Long is a top drawer prospect; obviously nobody knows on the PTBNL right now.

Looks like mostly a salary dump, although Upton was going to walk as a FA no matter what they did.

Yes, but with so little money due, there are a number of teams he could have helped. You'd think there would have been enough of a market to get them something of value.

Dodgers and Expos played three straight doubleheaders in the wake of the Rodney King riots.

No one is taking on Cabrera's contract. He's fallen off a cliff at 34, he's starting to get nagging injuries and there's six years and there's 184 MILLION left. The Tigers would need to eat half, as a starting point.

The risk with Upton is that if he blows out an ACL or gets hit in the face with a fastball he's not going to opt out, and the acquiring team is stuck with the remaining 88 million. The other teams in the race can't afford that and the big spenders don't have really have a spot for him.

If the Tigers can ship out Verlander at anything less than a dead loss, they pretty much have to.

Victor Martinez career is probably over due to heart palpitations, so they'll have to pay off his monster deal too, as well as Cabrera's $184 million. At some point they just have to start paying it off.

Wouldn't insurance cover the balance of Martinez's contract, if he's PUP because of a heart issue?

I imagine that'll go to arbitration of some sort.

I heard that the Astros were all in on Verlander. Don't know why that hasn't been put to bed yet.

Maybe the Astros still have doubts on his current performance level -- he pitched fine the other night -- or maybe they're trying to drive the price down.

But the Tigers have to be at a point they'll take almost any deal short of a complete giveaway.
