What I don't understand about the immigration issue is why it's a big deal to so many people. A lot of things are illegal. What is it about this crime that makes it so special?
Yes, some people think that every single thing comes back to immigration, the economy, crime, health care, national security, terrorism, etc. but even if we could somehow deport every single person in this country who is here illegally, it wouldn't put a dent in the crime rate or number of uninsured people.

 

His highlighting of people who lost family members due to crimes committed by immigrants was a good example.

 

It's not actually a criminal offense to be here as an undocumented immigrant. It's a violation of immigration laws but not every legal violation is a criminal violation (ie. violations of OSHA, of the ADA, of Title VII, of Title IX, etc.). These cases are not handled as criminal prosecutions, though the consequences are still potentially devastating. Semantics perhaps, but it's a personal pet peeve. It also suggests -- intentionally or otherwise -- that kids brought here by their parents are criminals. Or that the parents themselves are criminals for doing at great risk what any of us would do if we were desperate to escape unthinkable poverty, violence and/or political, tribal or religious repression. Improper entry may technically be a criminal offense, but a huge chunk of so-called "illegal immigrants" entered legally but overstayed a travel visa or a work visa, which is not a criminal offense.

 

I'm guessing Congress will finally step in save dreamers. But with the dysfunctionality of this congress, it's not a guarantee.

And don't think for a second Trump is bluffing. He would happily have law enforcement rounding up hundreds of thousands of people, many of them being separated from their families, and load them up in arpaio-style camps until they can be shipped to a country they've literally never seen.

 

This is the thing, of course. Most immigrants are trying to escape poverty and/or are trying to avoid being killed. And trying to keep their kids from starving or being killed.

And some factions in America close their eyes to this. Poor and oppressed people [cue the music] yearning to be free, and now people in America are saying, "We don't want that here."

What if you were running – running hard – from your home to avoid being slaughtered?

Desperation ain't a crime. Desperate people ain't automatically stupid nor criminal, either.

 

You're right. I just don't understand why people seem to think immigration affects so many other things that it does not.

 

Statistically how big a problem is that? I know one is one too many, but how big a problem is it?

 

Protecting white identity politics doesn't count as identity politics.

 

Can't wait to see the damage done once these people are deported and some of them are radicalized. Should be great goddamned fun to watch on the teevee.

 

And if all "illegals" were rounded up and deported, the US economy would crash. They're doing jobs no Trump voter would ever consider doing.
