I bit on a really cheap ticket to visit family next week, and I'm wondering how much of a clusterfuck I'm in for. (The price was right and it was a non-stop.)

Plus: I'm not planning to check a bag and the flight is ~2 hours. With a short flight, I figure it couldn't be that bad.

KNOW AND FOLLOW THE RULES re: carry-on bag, etc. I've flown them with little incident, but you've gotta play by their rules. Otherwise your cheap ticket's gonna wind up costing you way more than you'd originally thought.

What dq said, absolutely everything was a fee. I flew Spirit once and it predictably sucked. I would do it again if I could save over $100 per leg of the flight (and if the flight wasn't too long).

If you've ever wondered how bad hell might be, flying Spirit will help answer your question.

Sounds like my flights to Myrtle Beach from either Plattsburgh NY or Bradley (ct). So far I have had great luck with Spirit. About 6 flights over the last few years. I hear horror stories, but so far so good. I am on the short side but I don't find their seats to be too close together. You can always upgrade to the big seat. This July they had a week of extra cheap seats-103.00 for 3 people to MB, 2 hr direct. Bags extra but you can not beat that. Another benefit for me was the Plattsburgh and MB airports are small, a delight to travel through.

    1) Pay in advance for a checked bag or else they'll hit you hard at the airport.
    2) Fly later in the day and you're almost guaranteed to have a nice, long delay. Early flights are usually close to being on time.
    3) Expect the seats to be uncomfortable
    4) Plan on paying $3-4 for a Coke.
    5) It can be worth it if the flight is cheap enough. I once flew to Vegas for $9 and won $1,200.
    6) Make sure your bag fits in their compartment at the gate or plan on checking it (for $100 if I remember correctly)
    7) My wife refuses to fly Spirit after doing it twice no matter how cheap the tickets are.

I used it once for a day trip from Vegas to L.A. and back. It was fine.

It seems tailor made for jaunts like that, where we didn't even have carry-ons.

Flying off brand airlines is not playing the percentages.

Can't emphasize this enough. Think of it the way you'd think of buying a car. As you add options, the price rises.

Is one of the options death?
