I thought they would have had a better career...

I always thought Matthew Modine might have been bigger. He worked with some great directors (Kubrick, Demme, Pakula, Altman, John Sayles) - I figure if he did one big-budget blockbuster he might have gotten to another level - instead he did Cutthroat Island - the largest box office bomb (adjusted for inflation).

I actually liked Garofalo, thought she was talented and was funny while making you think a little bit, but I always recognized she was an acquired taste. I think her career turned out about what it should have: A quirky comedienne who was never going to be a huge mainstream star.

Modine had Vision Quest amd FMJ back to back which is as good a 1-2 punch as anyone can ask for.

They offered him Top Gun, he passed because he felt it was too pro-military. Tom Cruise owes him a beer or perhaps an entire brewery. That movie not only made Cruise's career, it also more or less created his screen persona that he continues to carry to this day.

Yeah - seeing Modine in Memphis Belle, I just don't see him as Maverick.

Matthew Sweet should have been huge. (And damn, I wish I could find an online stream of his acoustic cover of "Bad Time." I have it on a disc, but am not sure how to share it or if it's kosher to do so.)

He's a rock tweener. Too rockin' for moms and girls. Too poppy for the boys.

King's X. They stole the show at Woodstock '94, then...nothing.

A fair assessment. Then again, I'm female and an on and off stealth rocker in terms of taste and whatever is in high rotation.

Conversations about Matthew Sweet usually go something like this:
    "That's Matthew Sweet?"
    "Yep."
"Hunh. I like that song. Are you sure that's Matthew Sweet?"

Sweet also didn't help his cause for pop stardom by porking up big time.

His Under The Covers CDs with Susanna Hoffs are awesome, though.

Anyone watched the most recent Red Hot American Summer season? Garofalo got the Lisa Ann plastic surgery package. You could swap her in on Who's Nailin' Palin and no one would bat an eye.

    Also, I can't believe I didn't post this earlier:
