Always felt he was a dabbler. Seems like he would tell his agent "ya know, SportsCenter looks kind of cool". Or GMA. Then he loses interest after a year.

It does chap me when I see something like this. I think of my career. More wins than losses. Once guided a city without power for a week during a horrific flood. Same with tornadoes. Elections. Police shootings. School shootings.

That's when you see people who can't adlib on ESPN and, well, it pisses you off a little.

    Yep.

He was heir apparent at GMA and left to be heir apparent at Today. Didn't have the patience the stick around at either. At some point he may want to consider that his only real career success is being a decent Sportscenter morning anchor who was never trusted enough to get an evening spot at ESPN.

The race and gender thing is a hell of a trade-off.

Yes, being a black woman has allowed Jemele to stand out in sportswriting and TV in a way a white dude certainly can't.

It also means that when she gets an anchor gig alongside a black man we get a 29 page thread on it, with posters seriously asking questions like "What makes ESPN think anyone actually wants this?" She'll always have a target on her back.

It warranted a thread because Generation Hip Hop hosting the 6 o'clock Sportscenter on a permanent basis was as big as anything ESPN had ever done.

I keep thinking of the SNL skit about Beyonce's Formation.

"Maybe this song isn't for us."
    "But usually everything is!"

Completely unrelated to the topic, but I vaguely remembered that Wellstone crash and Googled it. Plane didn't go down because of weather, visibility or foul play -- it pretty much went down because the two pilots sucked at being pilots. Dang.

    True, true.

It should, in theory, be least true in journalism. That should be the one place where, the more starpower allowance you give, the less likely you are to actually get at the heart of something or have substantial debate.

It's one of the weaknesses of the industry. Not fatal, but massive - it hurts the credibility of the institution.

That's fine. We have threads on all kinds of stuff.

Again, this one hit 29 pages on a show where the only noteworthy thing is the anchors are black. We got pages of posts fixated on her weight. We got a post bewildered at why ESPN is targeting a show to athletes instead of the audience. We got Boom under a different name doing his racist dipshit act.

Give the same show to two white people and this thread dies with post number two.

What if those two white people were YF and Starman?

Why is this thread called Jemele and Mike if we're only going to talk about Jemele?
