I suggested Gary as an option to my friend just the other day.

Both Gary and Detroit should basically offer Amazon a shit load of land for free, and the kind of autonomy that Disney has in Florida.

 

Gary would have to, and this is just for starters:

(1) Raze a shitload of land, to the point that there is a massive buffer between Amazon headquarters and the rest of Gary;
(2) Re-brand the Amazon company town as something apart from Gary, kind of like Brooklyn is its own thing.

 

(3) De-annex the land so Amazon can install its own puppet government.

Yep. This is exactly what I'm talking about.

Let them have full governance. Their own police force and fire department. Their own (nuclear) power plant. They set the building codes. Everything. Let them own and run Gary airport too.

 

There’s some good architecture in the Midwest.

 

Looks like the Metrodome with some palm trees. Guess it's not palm trees, first glance thought it was.

 

“Who says the Midwest lacks architecture of note?”

Literally no one says that.

 

Chicago is known for its architecture.

Giants in the field like van der Rohe, Wright, Burnham, and Saarinen have multiple works in the Midwest

Current stars like Calatrava are also represented in the Midwest.

Exciting new buildings like 150 N. Riverside continue to go up in Chicago.

But, we get the, “look what we just discovered, which goes against the conventional wisdom,” headline.

And they’re both in Wisconsin for Christ’s sake.

It doesn’t begin to scratch the surface of the abundance of architectural gems in the Midwest.
