You had me until "when in reality, they are only there to have their talents exploited for profit..."

The players, themselves, are using their talents, or, if you'd rather look at it that way, choosing to have their talents exploited. But they are choosing. It's what they do well, it's something that not everyone -- hardly anyone, in fact -- can do so well, and they are profiting, handily, from it.

Now, I have no problem with that. It's partly why I wish that I had some really special gift that not everyone has. I feel the same jealousy/admiration/and yes, the thought that it's a privilege, for those with real artistic, musical, or even mechanical abilities, and such. But they're not being exploited, at least not without their knowledge, choice and consent. They're taking advantage of some opportunities that most, rightfully, are never afforded. And could never be offered.

 

Only if you conflate talent and hard work with privilege. Professional athletes have earned their place. They generally represent one of the better examples of the kind of meritocracy we pretend to value so much.
