The Case for Bad Coffee

    The guy who wrote this knows you can get a pound of decent mid-grade coffee (Dunkin' Donuts, Starbucks, Folgers, etc.) for about $6, right?
    Or, in true annoying hipster fashion, is his whole point to talk about loving instant coffee while claiming to not really love instant coffee, thus making it an ironic passion that he can deny is an ironic passion?

    I’m trying to put together this guy’s timeline.

    He studied in Italy. Worked at Starbucks in the Cincinnati area until he was 27, or so.

    So, when did he get to Brooklyn, where he was still buying fancy coffee, and what was he doing for a living?

    I feel like he left out a lot of the white privilege from his bio.

    I think he was talking about comfort foods that we associate with particular people and emotions and that instant coffee has become that for him. To each his own as far as I'm concerned. I proudly drink my hazelnut coffee in the morning.

    What I really love is having the included breakfast at a French hotel. They have those massive automated machines that will make you an espresso, latte, americano .... whatever you want at the push of a button. THAT is civilized.

    I enjoy the Seattle's Best Henry's Roast or Dark Blend myself.

    I'm drinking a pot of Joey Kramer's Rockin' & Roasting' from Guatemala. It's not that great.

    I had no idea.
    I live in Central California, though, and I have not been to Brooklyn since my Aunt Nora died.
    Probably around 1978. Nobody cared about Brooklyn back then.

    This made me smile. Ms. Ragu hates to waste anything. She saves left over coffee and will microwave it the next day rather than drinking from the new pot. Mind you, she resisted even using a microwave until she had been with me for a few years.

    I don't know if it's specifically Brooklyn cool, but it's been Miami cool for about 10 years.

    Here's a Times article from 2009:

    I use the microwave for three things:

    popcorn
    melting butter (usually for popcorn)
    Softening a pint of ice cream, so I can eat it right away (about 15 seconds)

    Those are the only approved uses.

    Microwave popcorn is trash. Air popped is the only way to live.

    Not to mention all the PFOA you're exposing yourself too with the microwave popcorn bags.
