Well, who knows who they voted for. And it's not like there's a bunch of choices that ensure voting for so-and-so gets rid of the guns.

 

We don't even know how many are dead yet. This is still very much a developing story. There's plenty of time to put the NRA back on blast. This ain't it.

 

I'm off Facebook right now. I deactivated my account last weekend, during the NFL protest story. I didn't find the impulse healthy: "OMG, OMG, OMG, I have to add something!" I'm glad I'm not on there today.

It's different here for me, on a site of largely anonymous news junkies, where there are actual conversations and, really, who GAF if Joe Blow doesn't like it. He can suck an egg.

 

Dana's tweet is absolutely incorrect. Depending on the caliber of weapon and the type of silencer, you can get it really quiet. I've fired a .22 rifle that was no louder than the snapping of your fingers. (Made for a great day squirrel hunting, as you could shoot one and the others wouldn't scurry off.) Even a .223 silenced would be much quieter than a jackhammer, but it wouldn't be "silent."

 

I'm guessing maybe three hundred yards, but that's a Mark 1 Eyeball guesstimate.

 

In order for suppressors to work effectively, the bullets need to be subsonic. Which means suppressors work best in close quarters situations. where high velocity isn't required. Situations like carjackings, armed robberies, home invasions and domestic violence.

 

Listen to the sound on the video clips. You can't fire a semi that fast with that consistency between shots.

Sorry, that's just wrong. Yeah, .223 is the M-16/M4 cartridge, but it is frankly a pipsqueak compared to traditional hunting/military calibers like the 30-06 (aka 7.62 Nato), a 7mm magnum or .308. A .223 is essentially a .22 bullet on a bigger cartridge with more powder for a higher velocity.

Virtually any decent modern rifle is good for a 300 to 400 yard shot. Someone who is expert with a .223 can hit consistently out to maybe 1,000 yards. Military snipers with a .308 can triple that with more hitting power on the far end.

What bothers me most is the easy availability of high capacity magazines. You can get 30 to 40 round mags for a .223 easily, and 100 round snail mags are available. I've considered this sort of terrorist attack to be all but inevitable because it is so easy to do and hard to stop. Set up in cover somewhere with a good view of a large crowd, say a football stadium, then just spray the crowd. That makes being able to shoot well moot, because you're going to hit a lot of people and hurt many more in the ensuing stampede.
