He legally modified semi-automatic weapons to create automatic gunfire.

    Do I have that right?

It's not YF's fault. People are digging in instead of just acknowledging that they were wrong in the first instance. Why is it his fault for not giving in? He was right.

    I think that's right.

What a comfort that must be to the 600 people with bullet holes in them in a 10 minute spree. The guy had legally modified semi-automatic weapons to create automatic gunfire.

    BUT THEY WEREN'T AUTOMATIC WEAPONS!

Posters said that it was obvious that it was an automatic weapon.

YF said we should wait, and offered alternative explanations.

People mocked him for the alternative explanations.

Suddenly now the distinction isn't important?

We're back to my biggest pet peeve in journalism: Details are just a buncha bullshit.

Too bad there aren't enough copy editors left to raise questions before those earlier deadlines.

In the old days, that question – "Was it actually an automatic" – probably would have come up in at least one of four stops in the editing process: metro desk, copy desk, slot editor, page proofreader. And the reporter would learn and grow from that. Now the editing process is a joke, and the deadlines aren't much later than dusk. Shoot the messenger?

And that probably has helped spawn the "details are a buncha bullshit" culture. Defense mechanism.

YF should be picking those scabs in the corporate offices, not in the understaffed newsrooms.

All people here need to say is, "I guess I was wrong after all and you were right."

    They won't do it.

It reminds me of my wife trying to get me to apologize.

The poster you're talking about said it was automatic gunfire.
