He's doing a tremendous job hiding it so far.

Agreed. It's puzzling, which is why I'm reaching a bit.

I can see that, but what was that larger goal is beyond me.

As horrific as the whole story is, I find the puzzle over his motive kinda fascinating. So far it defies all the mass shooter prototypes. No extreme political views. No hint of mental illness. No prior criminal record. Not one of life's losers--but instead seems to have had a quite successful life (at least financially). Maybe he just had an evil heart, but the evil-hearted usually reveal their nature earlier in life, they don't wait 64 years.

I would like to know more about how he made his money. He sure seems to have had a helluva lot of it, but with no employment history explaining why. Pulling that thread might prove mighty revealing.

I can see why people are interested in the money, but I guess I've seen too many "Janitor leaves $1 million in will to his church" stories to think it's unusual. Heck, there are quite a few former Walmart cashiers who made seven figures thanks to employee stock purchases. Dude worked for a company that was folded into Lockheed, maybe he got it that way?

One thing I find mysterious is what Paddock has done for the last 30 years. He worked as a mailman, at the IRS and as an auditor until 1988. These were decent jobs but would have paid middle class salaries. I have not read about any jobs since then. Where did he get the money to buy these rental properties? I have never played video poker but assume that the machine is rigged to ensure the house wins. He was a heavy gambler. His Dad went on the run from the law when Paddock was nine so I don;t think he got an inheritance. What has been doing the last 30 years to live a comfortable lifestyle?
