I would also caution that -- and I'm in no way saying I think he was a Muslim convert, and acting on behalf of ISIS -- though we know little about him, or his motive, doesn't mean that the authorities aren't learning a ton about him and his motives.

I'd assume there's a tradeoff in play and, perhaps, "power" comes at the expense of one or more other desireable characteristics.
