Motive theory:

Wanted to become infamous. In a bad way.

What would spark that? Maybe finding out he had terminal cancer?

Interested to learn what websites he frequented.

If he was mostly off / completely off of the Internet in this day and age, THAT would be really, really strange.

 

Yeah, I figure that's about money. A millionaire can buy nicer toys than regular folks, and he does not usually get them from the lowest bidder.

 

If we're talking "powerful" as in the caliber of the weapon, one of main reasons the armed forces went over to .223/5.56 was that the cartridges are smaller and weigh less. Paddock wasn't worried about adding ammo weight to a 90 pound ruck. The military uses all sorts of cartridges depending on the job. Sharpshooters use 30-06/7.62, and when you get up to true sniping at long range anything from a .300 magnum to a .308 to a .50 caliber as is in crew served machine guns and was standard in WWII fighter planes. A 50 cal cartridge is 5 1/2" long, it's a big old honker. When you read that a sniper has made a kill at a range of a mile plus, it's a .50.

Professional gambling is one of those "professions" with a huge gap between the perceived glamour and the actual lifestyle.

Being an advantage player -- especially on slots/VP -- is one of the most monotonous grinds I can imagine. As quant points out, you have to search for those favorable 9/6 machines, and they're more common at off-the-radar places. Virtually impossible to find on the Vegas strip or major-company casinos elsewhere.

Same slog for AP table games players, except they also have to sweat the heat from the casinos.

The podcast "Gambling With an Edge" goes into detail about these people. Many of the interviewees are former AP players who gave up the grind to find something more stable.

 

I'd much rather work for a living ... unless being a professor is an option!
