Cam Newton thinks female reporter talking routes is 'funny'

From the Observer's editorial page editor (who I'm assuming is not part of the newspaper's chain of command):

Cam, Jourdan and how hard it is to forgive

I'm OK with this, I guess. I mostly agree with DD that she was using college humor (irony, sarcasm, whatever) to entertain a very limited audience. At the same time, this whole thing got started because of word choice. A bit too much of a pot-kettle situation for anyone to feel good about it.

And I definitely, definitely would like to hear Sally Jenkins et al. weigh in on why Rodrigue gets a pass. They're saying nothing.

What is Jourdan Rodrigue's job? I've seen it described as Carolina Panthers beat writer, a Carolina Panthers beat writer (with Joe Person also being one) and the paper's No. 2 person beat.

In Charlotte, where is the Panthers beat on the hierarchy? Is it the top beat? Does Charlotte cover North Carolina or Duke basketball? Might either (or both) of those be bigger?

I believe the Charlotte and Raleigh sports staffs are essentially merged. So even if, say, UNC hoops is more widely read, those reporters are in the Triangle. So among people based out of the Observer's newsroom, Panthers has to be the biggest beat.

As someone who has taught college kids, can I just say yet again: Do not put every stupid thought you have on social media. I am amazed at how many of them do not understand this. I see kids all the time who would almost die to work at ESPN or Fox or The Ringer ripping people from those companies. If your dad is a racist asshole, MAYBE KEEP THAT TO YOURSELF. If you used to act like a privileged college dumbass on a Twitter account you now use professionally for a big boy/girl job, MAYBE START A NEW TWITTER ACCOUNT.

Local weekly paper had an article about police visiting a school and talking about social media. It was 7th and 8th graders. One quote from the cop -- "When you post something on social media, who owns it? The site does."

Maybe change your name. If your real name is connected to your twitter name, guess you have to legally change it. Guess what, someone will find what you post.

Year I was teaching and advising the student paper as part of a fellowship, a student was killed in a very public car accident where he was the driver who drove drunk and killed another student. In gathering information for the story, I told the kids to look at his (very public) Facebook and Twitter accounts. The kids felt this was wrong and a violation of his privacy because that was "just stuff he posted for him and his friends, not the whole student body."

Oh they very much were. And a good j-school too. It's just a reflection of how kids view social these days. The literally do not think of their stuff as "public" in the sense we do.

As the kids would say, SMH. Ummm, no boys and girls his texts and phone calls are what is private. And depending on the state and who is receiving the text or call that may not be private.
