I remember flag duty at school and being confused as to why it was so bloody important to not let the flag touch the ground. As if dropping it -- even if unintentionally -- would bring some bad luck upon you or the school. Almost a superstitious thing.
Does a piece of cloth guarantee you freedom of religion or speech or -- as is most sacred of all for some -- the right to bear arms? Nope. No amount of fastidious caring for a piece of cloth is going to guarantee anybody anything.

I'm curious about various red-state school districts such as this one in Louisiana, in which authorities threatened to toss football players from the team if they didn't show appropriate deference to a piece of cloth. The ACLU opined that the school districts can't do that; it cited this case from 1943, in which SCOTUS ruled in favor of students who had been subject to expulsion or the threat thereof for refusing to salute the cloth and recite the Pledge of Allegiance.
So here's the question: While the Court's language -- "If there is any fixed star in our constitutional constellation, it is that no official, high or petty, can prescribe what shall be orthodox in politics, nationalism, religion, or other matters of opinion or force citizens to confess by word or act their faith therein -- seems pretty straightforward and all-encompassing, does it apply to extracurricular activities? Or does it only mean that a school district can't evict you for exercising your rights? Can a public school district attach some terms and conditions to extracurricular activities?
Anybody got any insight?
