If, as reported, Trump could not remember Sgt. Johnson's name when he called his widow, he was already down the shitter and into the septic tank.

"Twelve days after four Americans were killed in an Oct. 4 ambush in Niger, the president called the widow of Sgt. La David T. Johnson, who was among the slain, and said that her husband “knew what he signed up for,” referring to the soldier only as “your guy,” according to Sergeant Johnson’s mother and a Democratic congresswoman, who both listened to the call."

“When she got off the phone, she said, ‘He didn’t even know his name. He kept calling him, ‘Your guy,’” Ms. Wilson said of Ms. Johnson. “He was calling the fallen soldier, ‘Your guy.’ And he never said his name because he did not know his name. So he kept saying, ‘Your guy. Your guy. Your guy.’ And that was devastating to her.”

That's Pundit Error #1, that the result of the last election will be that of every election to come. Democrats and Republicans alike fall for it after every election.

You have to say the words he said in a dismissive tone to actually find them to be dismissive. Otherwise, they are the same words that Obama said to the police cadets and that the Navy Commander who died on 9-11 said about fallen military. It wouldn't have occurred to me that they were any different than the sentence you provided. It's essentially boilerplate condolences.

Trump never explains himself or clarifies. This is how children defend themselves, actually, or at least mine. They get indignant about your accusation instead of offering their side, even in the case of a simple misunderstanding.

So instead of him explaining that, "let" meant, "I was talking about consent," he just calls it all "locker room banter."

And instead of explaining that he meant, "He knew the risks, but he selflessly gave his life to his country anyway," or something to that effect, he just calls the Congresswoman a Liar McLiarson, and away we go.

This is how he gets himself into a bunch of his messes.

There are very good reasons that there are rituals and protocol for things like this. You stay with the established ritual and you can't screw it up.

Trump, as usual, winged it. If he could not remember the soldier's name, it would have been easy enough to keep a piece of paper in front of him with the deceased's name as well as the name of the next of kin being contacting.

For instance, after a military funeral, the family is presented the flag with the words:

'On behalf of the President of the United States, (the United States Army; the United States Marine Corps; the United States Navy; or the United States Air Force), and a grateful Nation, please accept this flag as a symbol of our appreciation for your loved one's honorable and faithful service.'

I heard those words at my father's funeral. I knew that the soldier on the burial detail had never met him, and I also knew that he meant them.

This whole sentiment can fuck right off. It can fuck off and die and go straight to hell.

This is *exactly* why we have the problems we have. Women try to explain why things are bad for them, and you've made it about you and your feelings. White men (yes, I'm making an assumption here that could be wrong) are completely incapable of 1) understanding that some things are not about them 2) realizing that their opinion on how to proceed is not always needed and 3) shutting the fuck up and letting other people talk once in awhile. Protesting in the streets is the wrong way, protesting against police is the wrong way, posting on social media is the wrong way, kneeling for the anthem is the wrong way. There will never be a right way to protest because protest makes people like you uncomfortable and you'd rather other people have bad things happen to them than you be uncomfortable.

And the whole "this is why you lost the election" remains and always will be the refuge of lazy, dumb thinking. It's a clumsy attempt at hostage taking to try to force people to where you want them to be, not actual analysis.

Here's yet another example of how Trump digs a hole, jumps right in, and keeps digging.

He waits thirteen days to address the deaths of the soldiers in Niger. He tweets lots of twaddle about inconsequential things in the meantime. When he gets called on it, he denies it, says that letters have been written but not mailed (because the secretaries at the White House are not efficient with the President's mail), then says that he is the very bestest President evah about contacting the families of those who die in the line of duty.

So, predictably, the story blows up. Equally predictably, the press starts fact checking him, and now he sees stories like:

Gold Star widow says Trump promised he would call, but he didn't

This guy is the master of self inflicted wounds.

The first rule of holes is when you realize you're in one, quit digging.

Rick left out that women actually go to the doctor for annual checkups, while we ignorant white guys wait to see a doctor until pieces of our spine are sticking out of our skin, or until we're at death's door.

White guys don't just hate Obamacare ... we hate health care, period!

White supremacy takes many forms, especially among people think they could never, ever be white supremacists.

Trump got 46.1% of the vote.
    Romney got 47.1%.
    McCain got 45.7%.

    Romney Wisconsin votes: 1.407 million
    Trump Wisconsin votes: 1.405 million

Trump did turn out some dumb hick white people who don't normally vote, but it wasn't enough to balance out all the votes he lost. What *did* happen is that a lot of Obama voters didn't vote. Many of them were black, many of them were young. Was it because Clinton didn't inspire them? Partially. Was it because of voter suppression efforts designed to lower turnout worked? Partially.

You know why we're talking about "oooh, don't piss off the Midwestern white people" and not "why weren't black people voting?"

    Because of cultural white supremacy.

You know why the media does endless profiles on Trump voters and ignore Clinton voters and Obama voters who didn't show up? Because Trump voters tend to be white and male, and even when we think we don't, we think of them as the only people that matter.

Plenty of parents have no idea what their kids are wearing to school.

Besides, the MAGA kids and parents think they are the ones who will administer the beating.

We can't be complaining about how Trump is subverting free speech and then kick kids out of schools for wearing MAGA shirts.
