Watson at Turnberry gets so much fucking run here. One time a dude had it as his all time sports achievement. Not golf achievement. Sports achievement.

    Give it a rest.

DL as in retired? Because I don't think he'd subject himself to trying to qualify nor being a figurehead at Augusta.

Could be. Retired after yet another injury.

How many back surgeries did Perry and Watson have? Did either take a multiyear mid-career break?

Admittedly I don't mean to say every great 59 yr old is going to do this and given that I'm in the half-century club now it resonates so much. But it gets so much run from me because I love golf and remembering how a Tom Terrific I rooted for in the 70's had it right there was magical. Stewart F****ing Cink! Dammit (and I think he's a great guy).

  6. His British Open win over Monty when he never pulled the driver all week, stands out to me as one of his best events. I think that was the same event where he pinged the yardage sign on the practice area and Williams and he both agreed to pack it in, because he was ready. Beat Monty by 2 in the final 18 holes and was never really threatened.

  7. I can't see that happening. If he wants to play I suspect the USGA will let him in. He's too great a draw to force to qualify. If golf lacks a dominant player - and right now, it does - TW will get to play majors until he starts missing cuts, badly.

British Open he won while hitting only two drivers all week was Hoylake. He beat DiMarco, Els and Sergio. Monty wasn't a factor.

He beat Monty the year before at St. Andrews, although interestingly Monty did get within a shot on the back 9 before Tiger pulled away and won by five.

  9. Just the way I remembered it!

If he was playing well leading up to it, the USGA could justify an exemption. If he's playing poorly yet still asks for one -- and in Tiger's defense I don't think he would -- the USGA would look foolish to give it.

Exemptions aren't that rare. Goosen got one for Oakmont last year.

Smile, Retief! You just got a RARE free pass into the U.S. Open - Golf Digest

Watson and Vijay (???) got them for Pebble in 2010.

Singh granted exemption to play in U.S. Open

Nick Price at Pinehurst in 2005.

The USGA justified Vijay's exemption (even though he'd never won a U.S. Open) by saying he'd battled injuries and that he'd won three majors.

Tiger has three U.S. Opens. Only Nicklaus, Hogan, Jones, and Willie Anderson have more. He'll get three or four if he wants them.
