And to do that, he'll need to make the cut.

I'll bet you a dozen ProV1s that he won't get four exemptions. But I don't think he'd ask for that many, either.

Another interesting point: Phil's U.S. Open exemption from winning the British ends after this year. Granted, he's likely to get back in 2019 by continuing to play well, but what if Phil AND Tiger aren't exempt in 2019. Does the USGA let them both in? Or just one? Or none?

If Tiger is healthy, the pressure on the USGA to let them both in will be enormous. I would agree that he will not want four. But... over time, if he's able to play, I think he'd get four. How could the USGA say "Well, it was ok that we gave Nicklaus eight exemptions and Watson five, but we won't give Tiger four?"

I think I'll take that bet, which I guess we'll have to let play out until he's 50. If he's eligible for the next 10 Opens and isn't offered four exemptions, I'll send that box of Pro V1s to you in 2027. They may cost $95 rubles by then and be subject to the Ivanka Beauty tax, but I'm in.

Ha! Here's to both of us, and this site, still being around then.

I think the pressure from sponsors would force the USGA to give an exemption, Because any tournament where Tiger shows will draw a lot more interest than one without him. I offer as evidence that this thread has added four pages in a week discussing his return and the running golf thread has 17 pages for the entire year.

When is this madness going to stop?
Tiger comes back every year to play his no-cut tournament against guys on the tour he likes and everyone gets excited about him making a comeback. I'm not just talking about everyone year, but the fans as well.
Without looking it up he was 17th out of 18 at this tournament last year I believe. He's a year older and one more year removed from his prime. Meanwhile, the new best players on tour are one year closer to their prime.
Even if his health holds up which it likely won't there's no way he can beat the young guys on tour now. There's too many of talented young players on tour now who aren't intimidated by anyone, let alone a 40-plus year old who they last saw tripping over his feet on the side of a highway.
I would be shocked if he was ever in contention again in any full-field tournament let alone a major.

Heh. I'll get you a pirate version of them that won't cost many rubles at all. Bought a pirate Photoshop at some book fair some years ago for a few dollars.

Tiger led the (short) field in birdies, which is one thing that some fans and media still hang their hat on. Forgetting that pro golf is first about not screwing up holes, which he also did in bunches at the event last year.

Lot different than playing four days in a row--or even 18 holes--but not going to let that stop me from getting my hopes up!!!! Tiger is back!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I'm obviously skeptical, as anyone should be, about Tiger Woods making a successful comeback.

But, unlike the last time or two, there seem to be a lot of big-time players impressed with how Woods is hitting it. Fowler. DJ. Reed.

Yeah, I want to see it in a real tournament. The Hero World Challenge doesn't really count.

I'm so weary of the inability of reporters to tap the brakes on his comebacks. I've read this same tweet so many times after his other two back surgeries.

That is not a Tour-quality finish to that swing. That’s a bunt.
