The three-wood has more loft, which makes the ball go higher and hopefully straighter. The more loft on the clubface, the easier (not easy, easier) it is to control the direction. Probably most of us amateur (polite golf synonym for lousy) golfers should always use the three-wood off the tee for this reason, but hitting the driver is more fun.

I can spray a 3-wood just as well as a driver. Therefore, in my twisted logic, I never hit 3-wood because when I get lucky with a driver, it's luckier further down the fairway.

    Thank you.
I've been playing golf 10 years, and I have never come close to mastering the 3 wood, (or hybrid). I will still top that fucker a third of the time. Maybe more.

My driver is so much more consistent (and far). I hate the three wood and it can rot in hell for all I care.

Way back in the day when I attempted to play, I wore out my 3-wood and rarely touched the driver. With the 3 I at least had a chance to land in the fairway. With the driver, I had none.

Before the advent of big headed drivers, the 3 wood was easier to hit and control because the shaft was shorter. Nowadays, the 3 wood is still shorter but the big heads are so forgiving that for the average golfer the increase in accuracy by a shorter shaft is negated by the forgiveness of the driver's big head.

I'm the same way. Driver is the best club in my bag. Hitting 3-wood off the tee just messes with my mind.

I used to be able to hit decent three-woods from the fairway, but not this year. Just used long irons for the last three months.

My clubs are 45 years old. The woods are woods. Guys were laughing at me and my clubs at a tournament. Then one guy said, look at your sweet spot, it's about the size of a quarter. Look at my sweet spot, it's about the size of your cellphone.

Isn't part of the reason the 3-wood is more accurate is that the head is lighter, making it easier to control -- i.e., not allow it to twist during the swing?

This is the correct strategy for almost all amateurs. Most ams hit shitty 3-woods too, and then they're just farther back in the rough.

Unless you hit one straight and not the other, hit driver.

It's mostly loft and length. The longer the clubs is, in theory, the harder it is to be accurate with it. You can get really light driver heads, and a lot of time how fast you swing a club has a lot more to do with the kind of shaft it has, not the head.

I have one persimmon 4 wood from the set of Hogans I got as a college graduation present. They were too good for me then, and they're museum pieces now, but I sometimes put the 4-wood in the bag if I'm playing a course with some long par-threes. I have a low ball flight (that's a polite way of putting it), so I can hit it reasonably straight off the tee. When I practice with it at the range, the sound makes everyone else turn and stare.
