The Virginia statehouse flipping seemed off the table going into today, it was 66-34 R.

Now, Democrats are looking for anything to be happy about electorally after what happened a year ago, but there's another reason that's incredibly important.

In 2016 elections for the House of Representatives, Virginia Democratics beat Virginia Republicans by an aggregate vote of 1,859,000-1,853,000. However, because Virginia is one of the most heavily gerrymandered states in the country, this led to a 4 democratic congressmen against 7 republican.

Showing up for these off-year elections is how these undemocratic farces can start to be reversed.

Trump has already thrown Gillespie to the curb on Twitter. Most unsurprising thing to happen tonight.

Imagine his tweets a year from now if things go badly.

My old state remains on my Christmas card list - and is the state House really going to flip? That would be pretty major and pretty surprising.

This is not so much a triumph for the Democrats as it is an avoidance of catastrophe. If you can't win in a purple state with the wildly unpopular, unqualified, incept, racist President of the United States as the front man for the other party, you're toast.
    So tonight they won.

It's easy to shrug off an election, but I guarantee you that the GOP now realizes that going all in on Trump is a recipe for disaster next year. You might get through the primary, but these results may indicate Republican voters have been significantly over-sampled in polling and even the 33 percent for Trump may be well on the high side.

Been a year to wait for tangible proof that Trump is an awful person and president.

Dems need to keep the pressure on. Bury the clown and his apologists in 2018.

I just left DC last weekend from a convention, looked over the Potomac and silently said my thoughts to VA voters hoping they would start the "resistance" and they came through tonight.

    Thank you VA!!

2018 has to be the correction from the madness we have now.

Dems need to build on this. They need to find competent, traditional centrist electable candidates like Northam. They are out there.

Also notable - Chris Hurst, the former anchor and boyfriend of the television reporter killed on air in Roanoke, won his election.

One of the things I like about the results is that all kinds of Dems won. Bernie Dems, moderate Dems, Socialist Dems - I realize consultants like to fit the candidates to the message, rather than the other way around - but I hope the party realizes a good candidate is a good candidate - regardless of where they fall on the spectrum.
