Todd Marinovich II, in the sense the dad is a nutjob -- even more so than Marv.

If Trump had LaVar put in a Chinese jail, we'd all be thankful.

Just tell him to win. Problem solved. Why do these coaches make so much money, anyway?

And Don King, who is a Republican and has been friendly with Trump, is thinking "Huh? What did I do to get dragged into all this?" I mean, what does he have in common with LaVar Ball?

Don't know a ton about the Chinese legal system, but it seems odd to act like it was no big deal that Trump got them out right away.

OK, maybe they would have just been deported upon a conviction, and not sentenced to years in a Chinese prison.

But, how long would the legal proceedings that would have led to a conviction have taken?

    A) The odds are there would be no conviction because they would never prosecute this case.

    2) These universities making trips to China are doing it to make inroads with Chinese leadership so they can open branches of the schools in China and improve their connections for international students. There is not a chance the universities or Chinese leaders are going to screw up these big-money issues because three dopes tried to pocket sunglasses. Odds are Trump had absolutely nothing to do with their release. There were much bigger issues at work here.

    What’s this based on?

The expert folks are quoting to demonstrate how minor an issue this was says the players would have been convicted and then deported.

It's based in part on the exact quote you posted. You posted a quote from a law professor in Hong Kong saying that Trump's assertion was "nonsense" and that he would be surprised if they were even prosecuted.
