Today we are informing approximately 150 people at ESPN that their jobs are being eliminated.

We appreciate their contributions, and will assist them as much as possible in this difficult moment with severance, a 2017 bonus, the continuation of health benefits and outplacement services. They will also appreciate your support.

The majority of the jobs eliminated are in studio production, digital content, and technology and they generally reflect decisions to do less in certain instances and re-direct resources.

We will continue to invest in ways which will best position us to serve the modern sports fan and support the success of our business.

Most honest job elimination memo I've ever seen.

Hmmm cuts before Christmas. I want to know if cuts are coming for all traditional news organizations. Will the hammer of layoffs come soon for all the ridiculous companies that have ruined the business? The Gannetts, etc?

It has typically been a holiday tradition. Book the Christmas ads, cut staff (many of whom were going to be on vacation in the coming weeks anyway) and boom, your income/expense ratio improves just like that.

Also, a lot of newspaper budgets follow the calendar year instead of a "fiscal year" (Oct. 1 to Sept. 30).

It's all about cooking the books to meet some management-dictated "goal" by the end of the year.

    "Merry Christmas, Mr. Potter!"

Was thinking about this and wondering when would be the perfect time to get fired. Ya know, if you had to be let go. And I think the simplest answer for me would be in answering another question first: What is your favorite part of the sports calendar? In short, when is a time when you’d have a lot to look forward to, as a means of distraction from your newfound unemployment. For me, it’d either be early April or early October. Before Christmas not only sucks for the obvious reasons, but there is also a dearth of great sports action. Unless, of course, your fantasy football team is doing well...

Mid-March. You have the NCAA hoops tournament, daytime spring training baseball games and the NBA and NHL playoff push. Only thing missing is football unless you're into mock drafts

    Today.

Today would be the worst time to be fired.

If anyone has any word on what online stuff ESPN might cut, or shutter, please PM. There's one site in particular that I'm wondering about, and I've heard Dec 15th is the big day to watch.
