The Johnson impeachment was a very murky legal matter, and a clear-cut political one. I believe had it not been the last year of his term, with everyone knowing Grant would be the next President, at least one of the seven Republican Senators who voted to acquit would have gone the other way.
PS: The Clinton impeachment was clear cut both legally and politically. Of course he lied under oath, but a decisive majority of the country did not believe the matter warranted his removal from office. So he wasn't removed.
