I’ve got like a third of a shitty attempt at a novel somewhere on a google drive

 

I have written the first page to about 30 novels.

 

I've got a draft of a Stephen Hunter-type mystery that I've been working on for about 10 years.

 

Sometimes I walk into a book store or a library and I think, Wow, a lot of people have written a lot of books! Then I remember that there's probably, what?—100? 1000?—for every one that actually got made.

I got deep into a non-fiction book that I had to scrap because the story changed. That was a good lesson, right there: Never write a book about something that might not stand up. History is way safer.

 

That's a long time to spend on the edge of your seat.

The expertise thing:

Dick Whitman walks into a coffee house and, holy fuck, Bob Dylan is playing today! Not only that, but Whitman is able to button hole Bob for a few minutes to talk a little guitar.

Whitman asks Bob how to play “Blowin’ in the Wind,” and Bob says, “It starts with an ‘F,’” then proceeds to form an E-shaped bar chord at the fifth fret.

“Bob, I own every official release you’ve ever put out, plus several bootlegs. I revere every note you’ve ever played. But with due respect, that’s a ‘G.’”

Typedylan: “You’re tuberculosis.”

 

I know!

 

I believe he believes it was an F.

 

So anyway, here in Massachusetts, we have a new twist on the political sexual harassment story. The husband of the state Senate President, who's a guy, has been accused of coming onto and groping men at the State House. The Senate President has stepped down from that post as a result, which indicates he knew his husband was a menace even if he didn't do anything wrong personally.

 

Typefitter’s long-standing argument that experts shouldn’t have to defend their positions is ... strange.

And now he’s writing a book about it.
